ANSI/ISEA Z308.1-2026 Workplace First Aid Kit Requirements

ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 is a voluntary standard that sets minimum requirements for workplace first aid kits and supplies. It helps employers choose a kit and know what to keep stocked.

First published in 1978, the standard introduced Class A and Class B kits in 2015. The 2021 edition added a foil blanket to both classes. The 2026 edition takes effect on March 15, 2027.

What Changed in the 2026 Edition?

The minimum quantities for Class A and Class B kits stay the same. When you check your existing kits, pay particular attention to the first aid guide and, for Class B kits, the tourniquet.

  • First aid guides. Both classes require a printed first aid guide in English and Spanish under the 2026 edition.
  • Class B tourniquets. The revision clarifies the performance requirements for arterial tourniquets.

The 2026 edition also expands guidance on workplace hazard assessments, first aid training, and kits for mobile workers. It covers supplemental supplies such as naloxone and anti-choking devices. Employers can consider these items based on their workplace needs. They fall outside the minimum contents for Class A and Class B kits.

Which First Aid Kit Class Do You Need?

Class A first aid kits cover common workplace first aid needs. These kits are typically used in offices, warehouses, light manufacturing, and general work environments.

Class B first aid kits include a wider range of supplies and higher quantities of several items. They’re designed for higher-risk workplaces where employees work around machinery, tools, or other hazards.

How ANSI and OSHA Fit Together

Federal OSHA’s general industry rule requires employers to keep adequate first aid supplies readily available. OSHA’s nonmandatory appendix cites an earlier edition of ANSI Z308.1 as an example of minimum kit contents.

Use the ANSI checklist as a starting point. Your workplace hazards help determine whether you need extra supplies, larger quantities, or kits in more locations.

Types of First Aid Kits

First aid kit types did not change in the new standard, and we reproduce the table here for your convenience.

Type I kits are the most common, used indoors and wall mountable.

Type II kits are portable and are most commonly used as first responder kits.

Type III kits are either portable or wall mountable for indoor or outdoor use and must be water-resistant. Type III kits are most commonly mounted or stored in remote locations where they might be exposed to the effects of weather.

Type IV kits cover all kit types that need to be waterproof indoors or outdoors.  This would include marine applications, permanent outside locations and for use in automotive vehicles.
